Christian Education Opportunities

January-May 2017

“Our intellectual pursuits should inform our faith commitments as our faith commitments should inform our intellectual pursuits.”         —F. Bullock, “The Dimming of the Light”

In Christian Education we seek to bring together intellect and faith, mind and heart, the Bible and current events as together we seek to answer the questions: Who is God and who does God want us to be? How shall we live? Within the pages of this brochure you will find opportunities to explore those questions from a variety of perspectives – from the insights of authors, the pages of Scripture, and stimulating discussion with friends. We invite you to join us in this journey together through the cold of winter and the thaw of spring as we seek to grow in faith by stimulating our minds and inspiring our Spirits.   —

ADULTS

SUNDAY SCHOOL (9:30 AM) BEGINS JANUARY 8

ADULT II, held in Room 6.
The class will study and discuss a book entitled Everybody’s Normal Till You Get to Know Them, by John Ortberg. Rev. Ortberg is a best-selling author and pastor of Menlo Park Presbyterian church in Menlo Park, California. The book’s major theme is “building community,” for as the author states, “community is our most fundamental requirement as Christians.” With humor, insight, and a gift for storytelling, Ortberg shows how community pays tremendous dividends in happiness, health, support, and growth. All of us weird, unwieldy people encounter God’s love in tangible ways and discover the transforming power of being loved, accepted, and valued just the way we are.” A second book for study and discussion for the late spring will be announced at a later date. Led by Richard & Donna Esther

CURRENT EVENTS WITH A CHRISTIAN PERSPECTIVE, held in Fellowship Hall (basement)
Join us for lively discussion and deep reflection on the intersection of faith and culture stimulated by books that both challenge us and inspire us. Led by Sam Hostetter

YOUTH

SUNDAY SCHOOL (9:30 AM)

The Bible has lots of good stories. Lots of good stories we know: of birds, and of bees, and creating the trees, and things that will help us all grow. But the stories are not all so happy. Some stories are really quite sad: stories of fighting, of dying, of lying…things that we see as just bad. It leads us to ask many questions; to wonder and sometimes to doubt. So come for some fun as we join all for one, and try to figure things out. Come early for snacks, on time for brass tacks, and learn what our Bible’s about! Corporately led by Laura Lawson, Tom & Vicki Bellamy, Amanda Campbell, Debbie Melvin, Darlene Schneck, Isabel Turner, and Craig Whitacre.
